10 advantages of being freelance

Posted on: May 20th, 2010

If you’ve not yet decided whether freelancing is for you, here are ten advantages of going it alone:

  • You won’t have a boss breathing down your neck. You ARE the boss.
  • You set your own timetable. If you want to start at 11am, you can. If you want to take time out in the day and work at night, you can.
  • You can take your laptop and work wherever you want to. No more being chained to a desk.
  • When you find you have a free day, you can go out and enjoy yourself.
  • You don’t have to put up with annoying work colleagues.
  • When you’re busy and you need to put in extra hours, that extra money you earn goes into YOUR bank account not a big corporate’s.
  • If you finish your day’s work at 4pm, you don’t have to stay at your desk until 5:30pm ‘looking busy’.
  • You can choose the kind of work you do. Just say ‘no’ to projects you don’t think you’ll enjoy doing.
  • You can choose how many hours a week you want to work. (If you only want to work part-time, you’ll need to learn how to say ‘no’ to some projects.)
  • You won’t have any office politics.

The next post will look at ten DISadvantages of going freelance.

Carole, you’re right about the advantages of being freelance. I just wish I could learn to appreciate being master of my own time.

After spending most of my career in staff jobs, I still feel slightly guilty during ‘office hours’ if I’m not doing something work-related!

Don’t feel guilty! I know one freelance writer who starts her working day at 10pm as she is more productive at night. As long as you get the work done, you can be master of your own schedule. :)

I’m about to go and do some balcony gardening. (Although it IS after 5:30pm so I guess not strictly office hours….)

Its a gift for freelancers and bloggers. inspiring work thanks to share.

  7. A common misconception about successful independent workers is that one day, in dramatic fashion, they quit their dayjob, hung a shingle, and lived happily ever after. The truth is, most freelancers start off moonlighting, volunteering, interning, and doing client work at night and on weekends in addition to a nine-to-five gig. If you fantasize about living the freelancer life, you can do the sameā€”even in a recession, starting now. Let’s turn some of your free time into a new career without giving up the steady paycheck.
