Six things I always worry about

Posted on: February 9th, 2011

I’ve been freelance for many years now – in fact for twice as long as I was an employee – but there are certain things I just can’t help worrying about.

  • What if I get really ill and can’t work?
  • What if I don’t get any work next month?
  • What if I win all the projects I’ve quoted for – how will I cope?
  • What if my brand new client doesn’t like the copy I’ve just written?
  • Should or shouldn’t I go away for a fortnight’s holiday – what if I miss out on a plum project when I’m away?

After all these years, I never seem to change. I worry because I’ll have too much work and worry that I won’t have enough. Where’s the logic in that? And I worry about things that MIGHT happen.

Maybe it’s just me, or maybe it’s general freelance paranoia that goes with the job.

Do you worry just as much? If so, what do you worry about?

Carole, have you been reading my mind? I have pretty much the same worries. I worry about not making enough money, and then I worry about having too much work.

It’s crazy. When I was still employed full-time, I was very cool, calm and collected. It would take a major disaster to faze me.

Now that I’m self-employed, I worry about every little thing.

I think it comes with knowing we have a big responsibility — just about everything in our freelancing business is our responsibility! The buck stops with us.

We have no bosses, colleagues or assistants to blame.

That explains all the worrying but doesn’t make it reasonable. I resort to yoga to help me manage my stress. How about you?

Glad I’m not the only one, Lexi!

Like you, I do exercise. In fact, I’m at the gym five times a week – also helps counteract the fact I’m hunched at my computer day after day…
